Andréanna uses photography as a means of inquiry into American social class and women’s culture.  This project is a study of what motivates women to form individual identities and groups often considered apart from social norms, and specifically how women’s roller derby is emerging as a new arm of the modern-day feminist movement.

Derby bouts feel much like a 21st-century incarnation of Rosie the Riveter. The extraordinary bonds that are created among the female players, their fanaticism for this extreme sport, and their apparent do-it-yourself attitude are invigorating and infectious.

Roller derby is growing rapidly, in part because of it’s non-discriminatory nature, quickly moving from obscure sub-culture to mainstream pastime. It’s attracting women from small towns and large cities alike, housewives and working professionals. and bridging socio-economic classes. Tough yet attractive, the women and their game are alive with an entrepreneurial spirit.  They capitalize on humanity’s fascination with violence in extreme sports and seemingly milk the “girl on girl” sexual stereotype to fill seats.  The women embrace their sexuality through the creation of evocative personas, arming themselves with make-up, body paint, kitschy costumes and radical names.

Derby demands extreme devotion and dedication from it’s female members.
New members are deemed “Fresh Meat”, and once passing muster, they soon begin to  live, eat and breathe derby life.  The growing numbers provide an empowering environment for all involved, but especially for the women who are encouraged to find or reclaim their identity.  This new competency is being passed onto the next generation of derby girls -   seeing their mothers, friends and relations be a part of this culture continues the growth and support of women and girls roller derby.
